J.W. Mathers Jr.was one of the first men from the Eau Gallie Florida area killed in WWII.
He was a Private First Class(PFC}born Dec. 12, 1919 and passed December 1944.
He was wounded and captured in the Battle of the Bulge. He died in a prison hospital.
Survived by his father Joseph W. Mathers 1894 - 1966. His mother Eula Mathers 1900 - 1972.
His wife Clair O'Hare and a child.
His mother was a Charter Member of the Auxillary Unit 163; Department of Florida Jacksonville
10 June 1948. Charter hangs in the Dining Room at the Post.
Mathers Bridge crosses over the Indian River from Indian Harbor Beach to Indialantic, named after him. And this Bridge is one of the few draw bridges in Brevard County still in operation.
