American Legion Post #9 has taken another step to enrich the veteran community of La Junta and the surrounding area. Commander Jay Scott has joined forces with the La Junta Chamber of Commerce to create a new Military Affairs Committee that will oversee existing and new vet events and services such as the Annual Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 11, flag presentations, Legion scholarships and other youth activities.
Post #9 was established in 1919 in La Junta and continued through the next world war, the Korean conflict, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm. It had begun to die out when Scott and two colleagues, Jim Ridgewell and Lee Keller, reorganized the post and created a new direction for the area. Over the past year the membership has grown substantially and a new re-energized Military Affairs Committee should insure more viability and added events for area veterans and their families.
Post #9 seeks new members who wish to make a difference in the lives of veterans coming back from duty in the middle east and all other regions of combat. A group of heroes who enjoy the open road, The Riders, is an added attraction to the reorganized Post 9. The Post will continue to be available for new projects to expand the community outreach. Post 9 meets the fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Woodruff Memorial Library. You can join by contacting Jay Scott at (719) 248-3938.
