The Cliff Sexton Post 55 in Buena Vista, Colorado was originally chartered sometime in the 1920’s. The organization had difficulties and was re-organized in 1935, with the permanent charter granted December 28, 1937. The Post was named after Ernest Clifford Sexton, a World War I soldier who was from Buena Vista, and now buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Each year the Post holds the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at his grave site.
In 1936 members were meeting in an old school building by the Catholic Church. By 1941 membership had grown to 35 members and a larger building was needed and they held meetings at the old Court House. In 1966 Post Commander, Earl Newcomb donated land and the Post raised funds to purchase the old school house and the old Head Lettuce building and moved them to the current location to be the new post home and in 1977 an east wing was added.
