The charter for American Legion Post 54 in Gunnison Colorado was granted. The post was named Bruce-Frew honoring the first men from Gunnison County killed in Action. Little in know of Clarence Bruce except that he was a good soldier and an agreeable companion. He as drafted from Sargents and met his death on Sept. 12, 1918, in the St. Mihiel drive, Co. American Legion park & building

By giving dances, benefit show, etc. the post raised money to buy shares of the building and loan stock with the view to build their own hut. In 1921 the present American Legion park was purchased by the post and given to the city on their agreement to keep it up and to retain the same name. Towns people and flag pole

The post has taken an active part in all legislation concerning the Legionnaires or their welfare. The Legion erected a Community Flag pole on the grounds of Webster Hall, and dedicated it at a Public ceremony on Armistice Day, 1940. The Post hold Americanism programs at schools, give flags to schools, and also award medals to students for good citizenship.
