On Saturday, November 19, 2016 several members of the American Legion, some of his friends and the family of Norman Dowdell gathered at American Legion Post 1985 in Firestone for a final farewell. Norman served in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He joined the American Legion when Post 1985 was being formed and was a Charter Member of the Post. Norman’s memorial service was held at the Post and was conducted by Post Commander David Stout. The prayers were offered by Post Chaplin Todd Fischer. The Honor Guard and the Color Guard from American Legion Post 32 in Longmont were present to assist with the ceremony. As part of the ceremony, the Color Guard performed a flag ceremony and flag folding with the flag being given to Norman’s son, who is also a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Post 1985. There was also a three volley rifle salute, and the playing of taps that was conducted by the Honor Guard. Ceremonial rifle cartridges were presented to Norman’s son. Following the closing prayer and the withdrawal of the Color and Honor Guards, the ceremony was closed by the Post Commander. There was a meal provided to the family and all others in attendance by the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 1985.
