Ernest E. Smith joined Post 108 on February 18, 1920, when 24 veterans of WWI met in the court house to form an American Legion Post in Pagosa Springs. Smith was born in 1896 in Iowa and served in the US Navy as a musician. He worked as a banker for 36 years, as city clerk of Pagosa for 20 years, and as a county assessor for 6 years. He died at age 95 in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
