The John H. Slaughter American Legion Post 30 has been active for years in supporting recognition of the American flag by erecting flagpoles, and petitioning to have flagpoles erected, at schools and in cemetaries in the area. The Legion's Color Guard's latest activity in this regard was taking part in the removal of the tattered flag flying at the Alpine Elementary School, and saluting the raising of a new flag that had been flown over the Capital buiding in Washington, DC. The flag had been obtained by Congressman J.D. Hayworth, who was also present at the ceremony. In addition to the Color Guard, the Alpine Boy Scout troop, also in uniform, also participated in honoring the flag.
