On April 10, 1999 the John H. Slaughter American Legion Post 30 commemorated the 89th anniversary of the American Legion with a dinner and dance for members at its new post hall. The Legion was founded by returning veterans of World War I in April 1919. Post 30 was one of the earlier posts established, chartered in January 1920--quite an accomplishment, given the sparse population of Arizona at that time, and the fact that it had only been a state since 1913.
