Due largely to the efforts of the women's Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 30, the Post has been officially designated a Red Cross Emergency Shelter. When the plans for the new post were being developed, the Auxiliary proposed installing large bathrooms with showers, in case of disaster. Once the new post was built, volunteers from the Auxiliary attended a weekend program given by a National Disaster Nurse with the American Red Cross on shelter basics. She instructed the fifteen volunteers in assembling disaster kits (including basic toiletries), blankets and cots, as well as keeping a list of homebound persons in the area who would need special assistance in case of natural disaster.
