The home of the John H. Slaughter American Legion Post 30 since December 1935, on S. Mountain Road in Springerville, was burned to the ground on April 7, 1997, in accordance with the contract that the Post had made with Merle and Margie Harper. The Harpers had donated a large lot on Main Street, on which the Legion members had built a new much larger Post,into which the members had moved all the Legion's furniture and equipment, in return for a cleared lot where they old Post building had stood, which was adjacent to the Harper home. The burn was conducted under the supervision of the local fire department.
