What Makes this Post Unique

Lomira Post 347 has received national recognition for Memorial Day Services.  Several Years ago, The National Legion Magazine carried an article stating that the Lomira Post visits the most cemeteries on Memorial Day (13) than any post in the United States.

Services begin early in the morning and are concluded with a Memorial Day breadkfast served to the public.

POST 347 HISTORY

From Records of early minutes, the monthly meetings were held in home, Heimermans Hall in Lomira and on the second floor of the Sternat Apartment building.
1942 - the post purchased a home from Victor Kinkel located on SW corner of Main and Pleasant Hill Avenue for a clubhouse.

Immediately members were busy remodeling the interior to meet needs of the organization.  For years the second floor was occupied by caretakers who were responsible for cleaning and upkeep of the building and grounds, preparing tables, chairs and etc. for funtions in the building and suspervision of the bar in the basement.

Programs of The American Legion are many both state and nationally.  Bintzler-Waehler post members have always been strong supporters of these projects.

On the local scene, one of the big events sponsored by the Legion for many years had been the annual picnic in June.  The picnics began with a parade at noon on the last Sunday in June  As crowds increased from year to year the festivities were moved from the Legion grounds to Sterr Park and then to a new facility and grounds purchased later.

1968 - The existing building was voted to be offered for sale.

1969 -  The Post purchased a parcel of land from Star Malt & Grain Company on South Pleasant Hill Avenue for a new building.  Dedfication ceremonies of the building were held in August 1969.  The club was "home" for Legion and Auxiliary meetings and social affairs.  It became popular in the vicinity for Lions Club meetings, weddings, business meetings and various othe functions.

2017 -  After many years of success, the slowing down of the economy and the older generation moving on without little enthusiasm from a younger generation, the building was sold.  Present meetings are held in the Lomira Municipal Complex on South Water Street.

Lomira Post 347 continues to sstrive to  contribute to the community with donations to local charities and scholarships, proceeds coming from outside donations, raffle tickets and brat fries.
