Post Namesake
Appomattox Court House: the site of General Lee’s surrender to General Grant in April 1865. When deciding what to name the newly formed American Legion Post, “Appomattox Court House American Legion Post 104” was a natural.

First Department Convention meets in Roanoke, VA

Post 104 Leadership traveled by train to these first meetings in Norfolk and Roanoke, Virginia. The meetings resulted in The present American Legion Department of Virginia. The Norfolk and Southern Trains left on Friday to travel and returned on Sunday. Leaders had lots of spirits and comradeship. The Hotel Roanoke was location of the Roanoke Convention.

Our first Post Home was a log cabin, had 15 members and dues were 50 cents -wish it were that now. The Post Home had no windows. In the Jan. 1926 meeting, it was decided to install a window at a cost of $1.75. Four months later after raising a few pennies at a time, the window was installed.

In the confusion of the events in forming the American Legion in Virginia, Post 104's original charter application was not acted upon, misplaced or lost. In November, 1930, a re-application for a charter was made and completed.

The present Post Home was built after World War II. With returning Veterans, membership went to 645. In 1950, a kitchen was added as was the famous Rainbow room. General George C. Marshall, Former Army Chief of Staff was the main speaker and dedicated the Post.

105 Howitzer installed at the Post Home

After 7 years of paperwork and coordination, our 105 Howitzer was installed. This gun was used by the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam.
