Clayton William Crippen  was born September 6, 1889 in Clarendon, Vermont. he attended Meadowbrook School in Castleton.  When he registered for the draft, he was 28 years old and lived in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

Crippen enlisted December 4, 1917 at Ft. Slocum, New York and deploed to Europe April 23, 1918. He was assigned to Battery C, 10th Field Artillery.

He was killed in action near St. Eugene, Dept of Marne, France while assisting in breaking down an advance of the Germans across the Marne.  Crippen received the Silver Star of Gallantry in action.  he is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Castleton.

He had two brothers who also served and survied the war.  His older brother, Frank and his younger brother Charles.

Charles had a son Ralph, who in 2006 was 73 years olding living in Cuttingsville.
