Lions Club Hall was being used to conduct meetings during poor weather conditions.

Building of the Legion Hall

Jan 1938

The Legion built their first Legion Hall which is later to be donated to the national gaurd and finally to the City of Shamrock. Today the building is the Communnity Center. Before the building was built the legion met in a hut, the DeShazo Legion Hut is what it was called during the 20's and 30's

Mar 1938

In March of 1920, Joseph W. Breen, a member of the newly formed American Legion and an officer of Breen-McCracken American Legion Post 297, met in Philadelphia with fifteen other prominent Legionnaires where they originated the idea of The Forty and Eight.

40 men and 8 horses were part of the Shamrock post in the beginning. The only reminder of this now is a flag still at..

DeShazo Post 68 Name Change

Jan 1945

The post changes its name to add Jack E. George into DeShazo-George Post 68. Jack was the only son of Vice Commander Flake George. Jack was killed in England in WWII. He was a bomber pilot with 16 bombing runs with the flying fortress.

National Guard and the American Legion

The National Guard starts a unit in Shamrock with training being held at the American Legion(Community Center Building today)

18th District convention with hundreds of Legionnaires expected. 400+ delegates arrived from 26 district post.

Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys play at a dance at the American Legion.

During the 1950's most city functions were held at the spacious American Legion Hall

Jan 1956

American legion Building is now the National Guard Armory. Most of the officers in the Legion are active members of the National guard and sometime between 1951 and 1956 the Hall is given to the National Guard.

40&8 are still active within the post and community. In 1959-60 The Forty and Eight severed ties with the American Legion and became an independent organization.
