About This Post

Post Namesake
Rosebud Post 125 is named in honor of Chauncey Eagle Horn, who was killed in action on July 29, 1918 at Chateau Thierry, France. He was an infantryman with Company M, 167th Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division. Chauncey was from Okreek, a small community on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. He has the distinction of being the first Lakota among any of the nine tribes in South Dakota to be killed in WWI. It should also be noted that he was 42 years old when he enlisted in 1917. Chauncey was returned to Okreek after the war and interred with full military honors at Calvary Episcopal Cemetery in Okreek.
