What Makes this Post Unique

The Sheron Faiferlick Post 105 serves small rural communities in South Dakota. In the early years, the Legion was the social hub of the community hosting picnics, meals, dances, card parties, rabbit hunts, paddle ball, basketball and later baseball. The Post provided that little something extra for those in need locally as well as providing support to Boys Town, the Abbott House, the Red Cross, the Children's Home, and the Polio Fund. They coordinated with the Salvation Army to provide supplies for families in need and served as the contact for veteran's benefits for returning soldiers.

Post members met in homes in the early years and by 1943, members were able to purchase the old bank building in Nunda as a meeting hall.  Discussion began in just a few short years regarding erecting a new building. In the fall of 1948, local contractor, Pete Rentz, was hired to build the Legion Hall.  The building was ready to host events by the spring of 1949 and was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1949.  The Legion Hall continued to support community events such as church meetings, firemen's dances, bingo, and the town of Nunda often rented the facility to host popular activities such as movies and roller skating.  The Post sponsored a baseball team for many years.

Today Post 105 continues to support the local community, charitable and Veteran organizations. Bingo and card playing highlight the annual fundraising event each fall. The Legion Hall is filled to capacity with people supporting our local Legion Post.  Post 105 honors deceased Veterans each year on Memorial Day by holding ceremonies at three cemeteries: Prairie Queen, Lake Madison and Lake Park cemeteries.  Prior to Memorial Day, white crosses are placed at each Veteran and Auxiliary members' graves by the local 4-H club members, and flags are placed at the grave of each Veteran.  As part of the ceremony on Memorial Day, children place rings of poppies over the top of the crosses.  Following the ceremonies, the Post hosts a community potluck lunch.  The crowd gets larger each year as the community pays respect to area Veterans.

While our membership is small, we are dedicated to preserving our history, promoting patriotism and supporting the principles of the American Legion.
