A special meeting was held of Veterans who served in the World War, between April 6th 1917 and November 11th 1918 was held in the offices of Phil Keizer North Bend Oregon Monday night August 25th 1919 for the purpose of orgainzing a North Bend Post of the American Legion. September 4th 1919 the purpose of this meeting was to adopt the Consitution of the American Legion and the Post adopt a silimiar Constitution. The name of the Post was decided upon as Sunset Post 34. The following meeting October 2, 1919 members of the newley formed Post were elected to the following officers.

Vice Chairman- Phil Keizer
Secretary- Ed Moore
Treasury- Clarence Kibler
June 2nd 1986 Sunset Post 34 installed its first female Commander Nancy Coddington.
Sunset Post 34 and Marshfield Post 17 merge and become Bay Area Post 34.
June 28th 2008 Kevin Owens was elected as the first Department Commander of Bay Area Post 34. Serving as the Aid to the Department Commander was John Martin and Department Sgt-at-Arms Jackie Collision.
Jackie Collision was elected as Department Commander on June 26th 2010, she is the only second womand to serve as Department Commander of the Department of Oregon.
Kevin Owens from Bay Area Post 34 was appointed as National Sgt-at-Arms in Cincinnati, Ohio by newly elected National Commander Charles E. Schmidt from Burns, Oregon. This is the first for the Department of Oregon, the first Natioanal Commander and the first National Sgt-at-Arms. Dirk Levy was appointed as the Aid to the National Commander from Bay Area Post 34.
