What Makes this Post Unique
While its most important responsibility is to the disabled Veteran, few people realize the tremendous job the American Legion is doing in the field of Community Service. Participation in all Patriotic parades and programs for years has been a custom. Few organizations can equal, none surpass, the youth programs in our Community. The American Legion is the largest sponsor of Boy Scout Units and here in Egg Harbor, we are happy to say that our troop #73 is one of the better units in the Mainland District. For a number of years now, we have been sponsoring a boy to Boys State, a program of citizenship training and of learning self government. For many years we sponsored a baseball team in the local Youth Club conducted by the late Franny Kern. Our Safety Essay Contest and our School Awards were conducted yearly in both our Public and Parochial Schools. Unfortunately, our Parochial School has closed, however, the tradition still continues in our Public Schools. In years past, the Post also sponsored such things as an oratorical contest and an S.A.L. Squadron (Sons of the American Legion). In addition to these youth programs, the Post home has been made available to many groups. During the cold war years, it was the center for our local Civil Defense. Problems on Social Security were answered every Tuesday at the Post home. It also was the meeting place of the Chapter of Deborah. Just as proud as the American Legion is of its record during the past 40 years, so are we, the members of Rudolph Elmer Post proud of what we have given to Egg Harbor City. The pride that existed 40 years ago still exists now.
