The Post was first named the James B. Mathewson Post to perpetuate the memory of a Civil War soldier. At a meeting on May 10, 1922, the name was changed to John Humiston Post #11 to honor the first Jaffrey man killed in action during the Battle of Apremont, France on June 16,1918. This change became effective on July 1, 1922. Because of the name change, the Post was granted a second charter on April 9, 1924.
