About This Post

Post Namesake
Post 12 selected Dat So La Lee as its Post namesake. Dat So La Lee was a Washoe Indian woman in Northern Nevada. She married a fellow tribesman and had two children. In the following years, her family died and she remarried. acclaim for her famous baskets. In 1888 she and her husband were granted protection by doctor D. S. Lee and Dat So La Lee assumed her name - a name similar to the doctors. In 1895, in Carson City, Nevada, her prowess as a basket weaver came to the attention of Abraham Cohen, her protector at that time who was also a local merchant. Mr. Cohen encouraged Dat So La Lee to continue her craft. A number of her baskets remain on display in the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, Nevada.

What Makes this Post Unique
Dat So La Lee Post 12 was originally chartered as an all women's Post and actively supported Americanism and Child Welfare programs. In 2008, after attempts to revitalize Post 12 as an all women's Post, and after concurrence to the few remaining women members, Dat So La Lee Post 12 was revitalized as a "co-ed" Post and has shown consistent growth having exceeded 100% membership each year since 2008 and having grown from 12 members in 2007 to its current membership of 73 paid members.
