Post Namesake
Bickel - Nelson. Charles Bickel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bickel Sr., was born on a farm in Osage Precinct, Otoe County, near Cook, Nebraska where he grew to manhood. He entered the service and while in training at Great Lakes Naval Station, he was stricken with influenza and died in 1918. He was buried with military honors at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. Clarence Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson, was born on October 9, 1891 in Spring Creek Precinct, near Cook, Nebraska. He was inducted on August 22, 1915 into the army. He died at the hospital in Fort Riley, Kansas, a victim of pneumonia in 1918, and was buried with military honors at Mount Hope Cemetery southeast of Cook, Nebraska.
Notable Members
Merle Riensche - Johnson County Commander and District 13 Adjutant Virgil Blumhorst - Johnson County Commander - 1956, District 13 Commander 1953-55, Department Oratorical Contest Chairman, and National Contest Committee member for Nebraska for nearly 20 years. Virgil Blumhorst was a notable member of the Bickel-Nelson American Legion Post 360 of Cook. He entered the armed forces June 18, 1941 and served in the European Theater of Operations as Battery Commander of Battery B, 802nd Field Artillery Battalion. Virgil received the bronze star and four campaign battle stars. He separated from military service on May 28, 1946 with rank of Major.

Naming of the Post:

The American Legion of the Bickel-Nelson Post #360 of Cook, Nebraska was named for Charles Bickel and Clarence Nelson, veterans of WWI. It was originally chartered in January 1923, but the charter was canceled in 1927 due to inactivity. The Post was re-chartered in December 1948. Merle Riensche receives District Citizenship Award.

Merle Riensche of Cook Post 360 received the District 13 Citizenship Award at The American Legion Department Convention. He was unable to attend due to health reasons, his daughter, Barbara Washburn, graciously accepted the award on his behalf.
