Post Namesake

Earl Ivan Gladfelter - Earl Ivan Gladfelter was born July 21st, 1897 in North Baltimore, Ohio. At 19 years of age he joined the Michigan National Guard's 1st Field Signal Battalion and was activated for Federal duty July 18th, 1917. His unit was combined with the Wisconsin National Guard's 1st Signal Battalion, and together they formed the 107th Field Signal Battalion, part of the 32nd Division, a combined Division of all Michigan and Wisconsin National Guard units. His unit left for Camp Grayling and moved to Camp McArthur, El Paso, Texas in August. In January the 107th FSB left Hoboken, New Jersey and arrived in England February 6th. The day before, members of his Division died aboard the Tuscania while at sea from a German torpedo attack. 230 men died before even arriving in Europe. Several days later the unit arrived France. The 32nd Division fought in every major battle in Northern France. On September 20th the Division left Joinville for the Meuse-Argonne front. On September 30th, his unit went into battle, and Earl was wounded in action. On October 4th, he died from his wounds. Earl was buried in France, and his body was later repatriated and brought home in August of 1921. He is laid to rest in Truro Cemetery, Columbus Grove, Putnam County, Ohio. Earl Ivan Gladfelter's name was requested by the founding members of American Legion Post 268, February 1st, 1920.

Post 268 is a young and vibrant post, always involved with matters of our community and our Veteran members. We currently have the youngest commander in the state, and are actively recruiting members that have served during the War on Terror. Our Post has a long history and was proceeded by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).
