Benjamin F(Franklin) Sullivan Born Nov 12, 1894, the son of James H. and Mary (Hogan) Sullivan. He was a clerk at the Maplewood Hotel in Pittsfield at the time of his enlistment. A single man, he reported to selective service board #2 in Adams, Ma on Oct 7, 1917 and was sent to Camp Devens, Ma where he was then assigned and sent to Co L, 325th Inf Regiment, 82nd (All American) Infantry Division at Camp Gordon, Ga. as a private. The bulk of the division was two infantry brigades, each commanding two regiments. The 163rd Infantry Brigade commanded the 325th Infantry Regiment and the 326th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to corporal Dec 10, 1917. Sullivan and his unit sailed from Hoboken, NJ April 25th, 1918 for England. On May 7th, 1918, they landed in Liverpool. He and his unit were reviewed by King George V in London on May 11th, 1918 who insured that each unit member received a letter stating, “Soldiers of the United States, the people of the British Isles welcome you on your way to take your stand beside the Armies of many Nations now fighting in the Old World the great battle for human freedom. The Allies will gain new heart and spirit in your company. I wish that I could shake the hand of each one of you and bid you God speed on your mission. George R. J.” They would sail from Southampton to LeHavre, France May 18, 1918 going directly to a rest camp at Escartotin Somme. A month later his Division relieved the 26th Division at Woevre June 25th, 1918 and the Second Division on July 10th. His unit was in the Ponte-A-Mousson sector from July 10th to August 29th. Corporal Sullivan was on a raiding party on Aug 29th in Port-Sur-Seille when they were ambushed by 6 German soldiers and he was killed.
