Post 117 is named after Oliver Ames Jr. a lieutenant with the famed fighting 69th. He died in combat on July 28th, 1918 and is buried in Picarde, France.The Ames family is known for the Ames Shovel Company which provided equipment for the construction of the United States transcontinental railroad. Stonehill College, home of the Department of Massachusetts Boys and Girls State, is situated on Land donated by the Ames family.
