What Makes this Post Unique

Abilene, Kansas is the boyhood home of United States President, Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower.  President Eisenhower was also Commander General Eisenhower during WWII.  

Abilene is home to the President Eisenhower's Museum, Library and Chapel. 

Abilene is also home to the Dickenson County Historical Society and Museum which contains World War II Honor Wall with names of individuals who fought in Germany.

Abilene has two cementeries (St. Joseph and Abilene) that have Silver and Medal of Honor recepents laid to rest at these locations.

Abilene contains a lot of early history with Brown's Memorial Home and Old Abilene Town that highlights the end of the Chisholm Trail  The Chisholm Trail brought many cattle drives to be sold and loaded on rail cars for shipment all over the United States.  

Abilene is home to the Greyhound Museum.  The museum honors former great racing Greyhound dogs and their owners.  Not only does Abilene have the Greyhound Museum but also the Greyhound Race Track.

 

The Abilene American Legion held its post meetings in the Veterans Hall in the Abilene City Hall building from 1919 to 1975.  In 1975 the post home was moved to 317 N. Spruce which was the VFW Hall.  In 2017 the Legion meetings were then moved to the National Guard Armory at 1009 N. Buckeye Ave..

The Abilene Post remains very active in participating in all the national holidays and remembrances.
