About This Post

Post Namesake

The namesake of Post 6 Georgia is Sgt. William Singleton Morris and Private James Franklin Little.

In July of 1919, a group of veterans who were former students of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville decided to form an American Legion Post.  In August of 1919 they submitted an application to the newly formed American Legion National Headquarters. The Temporary Charter was approved on August 11, 1919 under the name of "American Legion Post 6."  Later the charter members decided to name the post after two of their classmates who lost their lives during World War I. At that time the name became "Morris-Little American Legion Post 6 Milledgeville, GA."

Sgt. William Singleton Morris, Milledgeville, Georgia, entered service as a private at Spartanurg, SC.  He was transferred to Ft. Screven, GA, and embarked for overseas in May 1918, where he took part in the battle of the Aisne, Chateau-Thierry, and the Champagne-Marne defensive.  He was killed in action July 15, 1918.  (Info. from the Georgia State Memorial Book, American Memorial Publishing Co., Inc., 1921.)

Private James Fraanklin Little, Milledgeville, Georgia, was attached to the 327th Infantry, Headquarters Company, 82nd Division.  He sailed for overseas May 10th, 1918. While taking part in the action along the front lines in the Toul Sector, he was gassed on August 8, 1918, and died from the effects two days later on August 10, 1918.  (Info. from the Georgia State Memorial Book, American Memorial Publishing Co., Inc., 1921.)

These two heroes are buried at Memory Hill Cemetery in Milledgeville, Georgia.
