Post Namesake
The Bartow Post was named after Knowles Oglesby who attended Summerlin Institute and then received a degree in medicine from Vanderbilt University. Mr. Oglesby practiced medicine with his father in 1916 until he answered the call for volunteers and joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He was soon commissioned a First Lieutenant and departed for England September 8, 1917 and served with a section of the 150th Naval Royal Field Ambulances on the battlefield of France. Lt. Knowles Oglesby became the first native son of Bartow killed in action during WWI; he was the first soldier buried in France in the British Cemetery Foncquevilleds; his body was returned to Bartow in 1921 for final burial with full honors.
What Makes this Post Unique
Bartow Post 3 celebrated its 95th Anniversary as an American Legion Post on 19 May 2014, and received a proclamation of this Anniversary from the City of Bartow Mayor W. Patrick Huff, recognizing the Legionnaires in the community for their many contributions to Bartow.
