American Legion Post 197 in Jacksonville, Florida was chartered on April 10, 1947 under the jurisdiction of the former 11th District of the American Legion, Department of Florida.  The first Post Commander was Dr. J.E. Bush.  American Legion Post 197 is the largest African American Post in the state of Florida with over 400 members. 

                Since chartered, Post 197 has thrived under 19 Commanders and they continue the mission of service to others.  Post 197 members have held District offices at the highest levels including the first African American 5th District Commander Matthew Randolph, Jr. who was a past Commander of Post 197.  The first female Commander of Post 197 was past Commander JoAnn Miller who was elected in 1994 and past Commander Fred Matthews was also elected as 5th District Commander from 2016-2017.  He currently serves as the Department Membership Chairman.

                American Legion Post 197 is also the home of the American Legion Riders Chapter 197 which was chartered in 2010, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 197 chartered in 1947, Voiture 1604 Gran Du Florida (40/8) and the Montfort Point Marines Chapter #29.

                American Legion Post 197 is currently under the distinguished leadership of Commander Michael R. Clark. Post 197 continues to support veterans and our community by providing services, programs and activities at our Post.
