Post Namesake
Our original Charter application has been located and shows that the third endorsement signed Sept 3 1919 with charter to follow in the name of Wiley Sheets Post 28. When our name changed to Trujillo-Sheets we received an amended charter dated Feb. 12, 1937. Named after 2 Durango WW1 veterans that gave the ultimate price for our freedom. The history on this reads. Wiley Sheets Private. Machine Gun Co. 355th Infantry, 89th division. Born 9-9-1891, KIA 11-1-1918 at the Battle of Argonne Buried in Meuse France at the Commane of Ciergic Cemetery. Joe Truijillo Private Hgs Co. 331st Field Artillery. Born 9-9-1891 KIA 9-18-1918 at the Siege of Metz- St Michael Salient Buried in the 1st American Legion Plot at Greenmont Cemetery, Durango, CO.
Notable Members
Alva F. Lyons was the Commander of Post 28 when the name changed in 1937.
