About This Post

Post Namesake
When the El Centro post of the American Legion was organized, it was named the Boyce Aten Post. This was in honor of a daring officer (Albert Boyce Aten) who's father, Ira Aten, was one of the Imperial Valley's very first and prominent citizens. Born in Texas and raised in El CEntro, Boyce was a senior at Stanford University when in 1917, he entered the Army and received his commission as a second lieutenent. He died later leading his company of gunners and infantrymen in a pitched battle against German forces in the forest of Argon. In his book, "The First 30 Years," Otis B. Tout refers to him as "a true soldier of the American type who made the winning of the war possible." When his remains were returned from home from France, October 24, 1921, the funeral services held were extremely impressive. The body layed inside its coffin wihtin the Post and guarded by military detail until it was carried to the local Evergreen Cemetery on an artillary caisson attended by the largest cortage ever seen in the Imperial Valley. Today, many of the Aten family are burried at the Evergreen Cemetery in El Cento. In addition; the namesake is remembered by one of the major streets (Aten Road) and our Post...Boyce Aten American Legion Post 25, Department of California.
