The Mattoon Community contacted Post #287 and even though the elementary school was shut down, they wanted to see if it was possible for the Post to take part by allowing the community in saluting the Veterans on Veterans Day. We held it outside of the old American Legions White House. It got a little chilly, but people showed up with lawn chairs to sit and take part in the ceremony. The Mattoon Firetrucks came out to throw lights on the Post as we introduced ourselves one at a time telling what branch of the service we were in and what we did while serving. There was the shooting of the rifles and a salute to the Flag ceremony. The Boy Scouts were in their uniforms as well in support for the Veterans. Everyone was then asked to go down to the Community Center where there was food and drinks for all. The children played games where members of the Post took part in. There were prices given out for the best cookies, snacks or posters for Veteran's Day. A few Boy Scouts asked questions about Veterans and the different Wars that their Parents or Grandparents were in.
