Post #287 was asked if they would represent Mattoon in trying to reopen the Elementary School in the Town of Mattoon. We went to the Board Meetings not only in being visional supporters, but also Speakers in the importance of having the School in Mattoon instead of busing the children to another town, forcing the children to get on the bus around 6:30AM and not returning home till almost 5PM at night. Though the school was voted down, the American Legion Post #287 help in forming more community services for the town of Mattoon. This help in making the community more productive for their children and community.

Post 287 made the Local Paper supporting for the reopening of the Mattoon Elementary School.

Post 287 Adjutant Frank Wozniak spoke to not only the Board, but also the local News Channel about the importance of the Mattoon Elementary School to stay open and how Post 287 was supporting the community of Mattoon.
