The Race For A Soldier - Gig Harbor Half Marathon is more than a run through the scenic Pacific Northwest. This is a race run for hope, for support and a better future for the men and women that serve our country. This is a race founded by a brave woman, who lost a brave son, who proudly served our nation. A brave son whose life was cut short, like too many of our soldiers today. Post 236 has done this event for six years. Post 236 once again participated in the 2017 Race for a Soldier event here in Gig Harbor. This event started 2011 by Leslie Mayne. Post 236 is known for having free coffee and cocoa and our tent gets lots of visits. Leslie always make sure she comes by and sees us, get a coffee for the road, and it is always a pleasure and an honor to have her visit us. We talked with a lot of people and only talked membership when they asked about it. Doing it this way allows them to make the first move. Only time will tell if the people we spoke to will join or not. Some were sent to other Post in the Area. Post 236 also invited the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1854 to the event. Some from each Post are dual members in the Peninsula Veterans Color and Honor Guard which provides military Honors at Veterans funerals.
