Clayton Willliam Crippen

Clayton William Crippen  was born September 6, 1889 in Clarendon, Vermont. he attended Meadowbrook School in Castleton.  When he registered for the draft, he was 28 years old and lived in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

Crippen enlisted December 4, 1917 at Ft. Slocum, New York and deploed to Europe April 23, 1918. He was assigned to Battery C, 10th Field Artillery.

He was killed in action near St. Eugene, Dept of Marne, France while assisting in breaking..

Erroll Spencer Fellows

Erroll Spencer Fellows was born August 7, 1892 in Barre, Vermont.  When her registered for the draft, he was 24 years old and lived in Castleton, Vermont.  He had three years prior service in the Cavalry.

Fellows enlisted March 5, 1918 at Camp Greene, North Carolina and deployed to Europe May 10, 1918. He was assigned to Barrery E, 16th Field Artillery.

He died of wounds suffered in battle on October 3, 1918 during the Meuse Argonne..

Benjamin Smith Community Service Project

During the 200 Memorial Day Program at he Castleton Village School the questoin was asked, who are Cirppen and Fellows, the name sakes of the American Legion #50.  Other than the fact that they were both Castleton residents killed in France in World War !, little was known.  The lack of informatoin inspired Benjamin Smith to undertake, as a community service project, the task of researching Crippen and Fellows.

On this day we had Auxillary members Kathy Pritchard (aka Aunt Jemina) and Carolyn Carlton, Sons of the Legion members Dave Hendee, Jay Brown and Greg Pritchard and Legion members Dicky Rogers (aka official dishwasher), John Loso, Jimmy Pritchard and Dave Maloney.

Oratorical State Contest

Fair Haven High School Senior Charlie Cacciatore was Post 50's first Oratorical contestant.  He was coached by PDC Royal Sheeley and Chaplain Ben Boss.

He placed 2nd in the State Competition.

Charlie is continueing his education at Middlebury College in Middlebury Vermont.

American Legion National Commander Charlie Schmidt attended the Department of Vermont Dinner in honor of Commander Schmidt's visit to Vermont. The evening was well attended by Legion, Aux and Sons members from across the state and Whitehall Vermont. Four Chaplians Ceremony

Crippen Fellows Post 50 Family paid tribute and remembrance and held a Four Chaplains Ceremony on Sunday, February 4 at a joint meeting in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the sinking of the Dorchester.

Chaplain Ben Boss organized this event paying tribute to the 902 men aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, 672 died, leaving 230 survivors and the Four Chaplains, Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic;..

Oratorical Contestant sponsored by Post 50

4th District Oratorical winner Avery Carter competed at the Department of Vermont Oratorical Contest held at White River Juncton, Veterans Center on March 10.    Avery did an outstanding job representing the 4th District and Crippen Fellows Post 50 won 2nd place. 

Avery lives in Dorset, Vermont and is a Freshman at Long Trail High School.

This was the first year we redesigned the Castleton Memorial Day Parade and had all of the ceremonies at the Monuments in town and then a trip with the color guard to the cemetery for a final salute to our last fallen commander.
