On August 22, 2017, the first day of the 99th The American Legion National Convention convened in Reno, Nevada. Stevens-Chute Post 4 Commander William Chan and Adjutant Lara Chan were in attendance for the annual gathering of American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, and American Legion Riders from all 55 Departments. The general session took place at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. Highlights from that day are the Pledge of Allegiance by Master of Ceremonies and country music star Neal McCoy, honoring all the youth champions (Boys Nation President, Junior Shooting, Oratorical, and etc.), recognizing The American Legion Spirit of Service recipients from each military branch, and presenting donations to the National Commander's Funds of Temporary Financial Assistance (TFA) and Service Officer training. In his new position as National American College Alumni Association President, Post 4 Commander William Chan presented both cash and a check to National Commander and Department of Oregon Legionnaire Charlie Schmidt.
