The Woodbury Lions Memorial Council paid off the final construction debt for the Woodbury Lions Veterans Memorial to the City of Woodbury in a ceremony on September 27, 2018. Dick Krumm, Woodbury Lions Memorial Council Chair, presented the final payment of $29,999 on the debt to Mayor Mary Guiliani Stephens at the ceremony. The Woodbury Lions Veterans Memorial Council was formed in December 2007 with the purpose of raising funds to erect a memorial to honor all those who have served in the military. The group was composed of the Woodbury Lions, Woodbury American Legion Post 501 and Woodbury VFW Post 9024. The group initially raised $100,000 and borrowed $266,000 from the City of Woodbury for construction of the Memorial on City property. Over each of the last ten years, donations, paver sales and the annual Dick Stafford Veterans Memorial Golf Tournament raised funds to repay the City. With the funds collected this year, the final $29,999 was paid to the City. Dick Krumm was an instrumental part of the memorial as a local architect who published the initial rendering of the design and who chaired the council these past 10 years. The Memorial features an aluminum-based harbor that points out to each of the seven branches of the armed forces. The center of the Memorial includes seals for the American Legion, VFW and Lions. The Memorial is for all veterans and the community to honor those who have served this country. The Memorial provides a fitting place for the community to host Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the Fourth of July ceremonies.
