The Post elected to honor Harold Shelly buy naming a trophy to be kept at De La Salle High School in New Orleans because of Harold dedication to De La Salle and his commitment to Boys State for the better part of 40 years. Harold Shelly graduated from Peters High School in New Orleans La. and while in high school he attended the Second session of Pelican Boys State. Harold served in the Coast Guard during World War II. After being discharged from the service, he joined Broadmoor Post 215. At the suggestion of the late John Guirovich (Past Post 307 Commander and Past department Commander) Harold transferred to Post 307 to become the Boys State Chairman for the Post. He became the Boys State Chairman for the first District as well. He held the position of Boys State Chairman for Post 307 for well over 45 years seeing the change take place for Pelican Boys State and Bayou Boys State to Louisiana Boys State as it is presently known. Harold also held the positions of Post Baseball Chairman and School Awards Chairman throughout the years. Harold was the recipient of the prestigious Louisiana Mike Gehr Blue Cap Award from the first District and ultimately the overall winner for the State of Louisiana for the 1985-86 Legion Year. To date, Harold is the only member from Post 307 who has received that award on the Department level. There was a time when Post 307 presented an award to members for outstanding service to the Post. Harold was a recipient of an award known as the Sam LeBlanc Award. He recently received a certificate from the National Organization of the American legion thanking him for 70 years of continuous membership. Harold tells us he is proud to say that he is a life member of the Elks organization in Biloxi, Mississippi. Harold was named an Honorary Tulanian in 2014 for 58 years of service after his retirement in 2013. Harold served as Tulane's Coordinator for Distribution of Media Credentials from the 60's till 2012. He has worked 45 Sugar Bowls, 5 Super Bowls, 2 Final Fours, numerous basketball regionals, and 18 trips to the All-American Amateur Baseball Tournament. He has also kept stats at LSU for 11 years and worked as a member of the stat crew for the New Orleans Saints for 22 years. Harold has handled high school football reports for the Times Picayune for 5 years. Harold is a member who has happy to be helping in arears where he wasn't in the spotlight. He served as a Color Bearer and on the Executive Committee on the Post level. Harold was always interested in how Ed Brauner Post 307 was the best it could be.
