Post #287 took part with other American Legionnaire's on April 26, 2017 in Youth Government Days in Shawano. Students from local high schools came to take part in the history and procedures of the Courts systems. The Legion broked into Two fellow American Legionnaires taking a group of about ten students all around the Court House visiting different departments to even a tour through the Shawano Police Station. The High School Students were shown how to operate voting machines for elections, how Social Services help families in health, to how records are kept in the court system. The greatest display we were told by the Students was the visit to the Jail. They were impressed observing how prisoners are kept waitting for trial or how they were treated showing still respect even when incarcerated. The High School Students were shown that restraints were only used when a prisoner becomes disruptive, not as a punishment, but as a safety precaution not only for the Officers, but for the Prisoners themselves. The Students were allowed to have hand ons to restraints, observed the squad car computers,to a few Students wanting to have the restraints applied to them. It was an interesting, yet fun experience for them all. A small luncheon was given for all those that took part, where there was laughter and talking of all that they had seen. Not soon after that, a mock ordinance debate was held where the High School Students practiced procedures and enjoyed taking part in their personal opinions about laws. Some students were Foreign Exchange students whom at the end of the program, not only received a diploma for taking part, but an American flag as well. Students were released to their buses at 2:00PM to return back to their High Schools. The experience was greatly enjoyed by not only the students, but the Legionnaire's whom assisted in the training as well.
