Mathews County is the second smallest county in Virginia. A small peninsula bordered by the Chesapeake and Mobjack Bays. Population 8700. Our Memorial Day Celebration 2004 kicked off with the dedication of a new monument at the new Liberty Square Court and County Office Complex. The Plaque lists the names of the Mathews County men who died in WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam. Pictured L-R: Charles Ingram, Chairman Board of Supervisors, Alfred "Boobie" Lane, Post 83 Cmdr., PC Alvin Tommy Lewis, PAO, Memorial Committee Chairman and Senator Nick Rearras, 6th District, Virginia State Legislature. Believe it or not, the funds for the new monument were raised in only three weeks from a Fish Fry and Donations from county residents who believed in our cause. Over 150 legionnaires, Auxiliary and local folks were present for the festivities, music and picnic. Senator Rearras also, presented to Mathews County and to Post 83 Senate Joint Resolution 272 Recognizing the Merchant Marine and Maritime Men of Mathews. One third of the adult male population of Mathews were going to Sea during the WW II Era.
