In the spring of 1929, Berryville was the spring training home of a minor league baseball team from Pennsylvania. In response to an invitation from the Lloyd Williams Post 41, the Wilkes-Barre Anthracite baseball team spent two weeks in Berryville preparing for its season in the New York-Pennsylvania League. The Legion felt the hosting of the team would benefit the community at large with some good advertising and help promote tourism in the area.

The Anthracites arrived in Berryville on April 9, 1929 and was lodged at the Battletown Hotel. They played thirteen exhibition games against other minor league teams and college and military teams in the greater Washington area. The Berryville High School team had an opportunity to practice with the professional team. The team conducted its practices and games on the Berryville High School baseball diamond.

The Anthracites broke camp on April 24th and returned to Wilkes-Barre to start its regular season. The club management requested that the Clarke Courier print an article thanking the good people of Berryville and Clarke County for the genial hospitality shown toward the entire baseball squad. The team extended special thanks to Mrs. Pulliam, proprietress of the Battletown Hotel, American legion Post41, and every merchant and individual citizen who aided in making it pleasant stay for them here. The article stated that the players enjoyed every day of their stay and were exceptionally pleased at the pleasing manner in which they were received by everyone.
