The Town of Rockingham leased the American Legion, Pierce Lawton Post #37 the third floor of the Town Hall Building, To be shared with the Ladies of The American Legion, the E.H. Star ughton Post of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Women’s Relief Corps.
The rent was $100.00 annually, the town would furnish the heat, janitorial services and make repairs as needed.

Squadron #37 was the largest chartered junior group in Vermont with 50members in 1940. After World War II began, we lose track of the Squadron. Perhaps many served and now were veteran.

What should be noted, this was before WWII , so this was a project of the WWI veterans.
Post and Unit memners led by Mr and Mars John Lindstrom felt company E needed support and so troop boxes were sent. See the packing list (to include cigarette!) for the boys.
The Vilas Bridge was guarded by soldiers in 1941. These soldiers were active duty. The community organizations and leaders wanted to show their appreciation for their efforts while they were away from their families. These soldiers were housed at the CC camps near Saxtons River.

Post Commander Terrence “Terry” Griffin led the Legionnaires to a new spirit of commitment. His patriotism, dedication to the principles of The American Legion gave a new beginning for our organization.
Due to the loss of the Windham hotel and others, this would be the last of the Post #37 hosted conventions. As the Legion membership grew in size, it was impossible to provide adequate facilities to host another convention.

Robert Perham served as the Department of Vermont adjutant from 2001-20014. Mentoring all Dept. Commanders, officers and performing all administrative duties for 13 years. Upon his retirement a resolution was unanimously approved to name him Past Department Commander with all rights and privileges of the office. His dedication and attention to promoting the principles of the American Legion was a honor.

Stanley Rumrill Sr., past post Commander, began a program of including school children in decorating the graves of our fallen comrades each Memorial Day. He had done this for over two decades with integrity and honor. When he passed on to post everlasting, the teachers, students and American Legion joined Mr Rumrill‘s immediate family and continued his legacy of honoring our wartime veterans.
