In observance of Patriot Day 2017, Turnbow-Higgs American Legion Post & Auxiliary Unit 240, hosted a Patriot and National Day of Service and Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday morning September 9. This National Day of Service and Remembrance project was made possible by a grant awarded to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 240 from the National American Legion Auxiliary in cooperation with the Corporation for National and Community Service. The purpose of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance grant is to mobilize more Americans to engage in service activities that meet vital community needs and honor the sacrifice of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, or who rose in service because of that tragedy. The American Legion Turnbow-Higgs Auxiliary Unit 240 service was to improve the historically significant American Legion Post 240 facility by refurbishing some of the interior rooms and providing a beautification of the south entrance of building. Turnbow-Higgs Post American Legion Post Commander, Curtis Anderson and Auxiliary Unit 240 President, Julie Littlefield, welcomed the attendees and service workers with opening remarks to begin the Reflection Ceremony. Post 240 Chaplain, Leroy Griffin, Post 240 2nd Vice Commander, Robert Whiteley (Taps) and Past Auxiliary President Francine Pratt all participated in presenting the Reflection Ceremony that began at 8:30AM. Partners in this event included Tarleton University Corps of Cadets, Tarleton University Student Social Work Association members, active duty military personnel and their family members, military veterans and their family members, and other local community groups and individuals in the community. The ceremony was followed by refreshments. The day of service began shortly thereafter.
