ERATH COUNTY (May 29, 2017) – The Turnbow-Higgs Post & Auxiliary Unit 240 held a Memorial Day Service in the West End Cemetery in the Veterans Field of Honor Monday morning. There was a large crowd in attendance, including Mayor Kenny Weldon and past mayor John Moser. Burton Smith opened the program and Leroy “Candyman” Griffin gave the Invocation and later the Benediction. The guest speaker was Stephenville’s very own, Captain Nathan Collier. The National Anthem was sang by 2017 SHS graduate, Karsen Styron, and she did a wonderful job. There was even a member of the 26th U.S. Cavalry Philippine Scouts on horseback in attendance. He is Sergeant Gary Hurd. There were also two World War II veterans in attendance, Mickey Maguire and Honest John Rogers. Honest John recently turned 98 years old. God bless America and thank you to all the servicemen and women who have given their lives for our wonderful country and our freedoms.- By DAVID SWEARINGEN The FlashToday.com
