On January 4, 1940 members of Post 8 voted unanimously to construct a permanent post home. Discussions had already been underway to lease from the city of Pierre a 100'x100' lot at the foot of Pierre St. The building was stipulated to be built from logs and was not to exceed $3500 in cost. Federal policy required that building materials were to be obtained from the closest access point. The logs came from the Black Hills of SD. A contract was signed with the National Youth Administration to do the work.
By March of 1941 the cabin was completed enough to hold the April 2. 1942 meeting. At this writing (April 5, 2016) that would mean our April 2016 membership meeting would be the 74th year here in our Post cabin.
The cabin is a 65'x65' story and a half structure built on a 100' x 100' lot at the Foot of Pierre Street overlooking the Missouri River. The building was made of 10 inch logs from the Black Hills. On the east is a 9' wide fireplace made of native stone and petrified wood. Originally the rear 10' of the structure was an open porch and storage area. This was enclosed in 1970. An additional 10' addition was constructed in1987. Both were designed to match the existing structure. In 1989 a wooden 20' x 40' patio/deck area was built about 10' from the rear of the cabin (on the river side) and is a separate structure from the cabin. The deck has proven to be an immensely popular spot on nice days.
