We have always considered Programs for Children and Youth to be an important part of Legion activity. Annually we have presented Legion Citizenship Awards to deserving high school seniors, sponsor high school juniors to South Dakota American Legion Boys’ State and conduct student Government Days for high school seniors. Students from Clark and surrounding schools of Henry and Willow Lake have attended. They are briefed by county officials on the duties of their office and attend a session of the circuit court.
Interest in South Dakota American Legion Boys’ State has always been high among our junior students who had a strong desire to participate, but as like many programs, it has become more of a challenge to interest our high school juniors in this very worthwhile project. The same can be said for the Legion Oratory. We have sponsored and will continue to sponsor students if they are interested. I think the old saying applies here that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. We will continue to urge students to take part.
Clark High School has had the honor of having three students elected as Boys’ State Governor. Robert Brekke 1942, Mike Neal 1973 and Hugh Weber 1996.
