In May of 2016 South Dakotans who perished in the Vietnam War were remembered in Custer, SD. The "Gold Star" remembrance was part of the Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration locally led by the Harney Peak Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The DAR was supported by Custer American Legion Post #46, Hermosa American Legion Post #303, Custer VFW Post #3442, and the Custer County Veterans Service Office. Events started on 02 May 2016 with an Executive Proclamation by the Mayor of Custer City. 05 May 2016 activities started with the Hot Springs American Legion Riders Chapter #71, escorted by Custer County Sheriff's Deputies, parading flags through downtown Custer then delivering the flags to the Custer Veterans Joint Color Guard at the 1881 Courthouse Museum. The Color Guard posted the colors in the old courtroom in front of a packed room of approximately 75 people. A moving program ensued focusing on the sacrifices of our Vietnam War Veterans and the ultimate sacrifice of those who did not return. Following the museum program a lunch was provided at the Custer Senior Center courtesy of Custer County American Legion, Hot Springs American Legion Post #71, and the DAR.
