Jace Woodward, left, and Noah Zacher, right, are shown preparing to depart for the 74th Session of American Legion Boys State at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.

Approximately 320 boys from across South Dakota were enrolled for this premier Americanism Program of The American Legion. The program teaches democracy, the political process and demonstrates our form of government to these future leaders of South Dakota and America.

Jace and Noah recently completed their Junior year at Custer High School. They were selected by Custer American Legion Post #46 as its delegates to South Dakota’s Boys State. Jace was sponsored by Custer City Lodge #66 A.F. & A. M. while Noah was sponsored by the Custer Rotary Chapter and the Custer Wildcat Booster Club.

During the week of 30 May – 03 June 2016 they learned about the structure of South Dakota state and local government through an intense program of creating and running a fictitious 51st state from the city level up. They campaigned for election and filled offices at all levels of state and local government. Following completion of Boys State they returned home far better versed in the structure of our American form of government and well on their way to becoming effective citizens.
