Legion members had discussed how we can help the handicap people coming into the hall. We talked about a ramp for wheel chairs, but to get in the basement the ramp would have to be too long to meet requirements for a wheel chair ramp. Even with a ramp that would go back and forth would take up a lot of floor room. Other alternative would be chair lifts going to the basement and going to the main floor. We talked to a company about the cost with installation. It was around $7500. We didn't have the money to have them installed. We would also have to have the doorway made wider for the lift going to the basement. We heard of an auction that had chair lifts in it and decided to go and check them out. So, we purchased two chair lifts for around $200. We had the local Lumber yard do the doorway widening and the company that gave us the estimate for their chair lifts to install these chair lifts. Doorway widening included rebuilding the complete stairway. Cost was $3,250. This had to be done no matter where the chair lifts came from. Installation of the chair lifts cost $1150. So, we saved a little over $6000 on the used chair lifts. However, since installation, we have spent around another $700 for repairs to keep the older chairs working.
