Dale Virgil Uhre was born on July 6, 1918, in Letcher, South Dakota. He was born to his mother and father, Anna and Albert Uhre; he had two brothers, Owen B. and Marvin Uhre. He was baptized and confirmed by Reverend Otis Knudson. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1938.

Dale enlisted into the Navy in 1940 and started training at the Great Lakes. He was assigned to the ship called the Whitney and went to action in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor. He was later assigned to the McCrawley, which was a transport ship, where he was a mechanic. The ship was struck by three torpedoes and was sunk June 30, 1943, off Randova Island. On July 1, 1944, Dale was declared dead, according to Public Law 490.

Memorial services were held for Navy MM 2-C Dale V. Uhre on Sunday, August 15, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church, which was the same church at which he had been baptized and confirmed. He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
