On March 4, 2017, Area 4, District 5, and Stevens-Chute Post 4 winner Danielle Axten competed in the annual Department of Oregon oratorical contest. The contest was held at Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs in Salem, Oregon. She competed against Area 1 and 2016 3rd place contestant Kunai Bhuttacharjee (sponsored by Post 104 in Aloha, OR); Area 2, 2015, and 2016 Department of Oregon Oratorical winner James Aldrich (sponsored by Post 149 in Salem, OR); and Area 3 and 2016 4th place contestant Brook Hopher (sponsored by Post 123 in Myrtle Creek, OR). After each contestant provided 2 orations on the United States Constitution to American Legion family members, family, friends, and community members, the judges awarded the 2017 Department of Oregon title to James Aldrich. Danielle Axten finished the Department contest in 3rd place. Kunai took 2nd place. Brook took 4th place. Danielle had her parents; Area 4, District 5, Stevens-Chute Post 4 Oratorical Chair and Adjutant Lara Chan; Department of Oregon Assistant Sgt-Arms, District 5 Vice Commander South, and Stevens-Chute Post 4 Commander William Chan; District 5 and Post 29 Prineville Adjutant John Reish; and Department of Oregon Sgt-At-Arms and Post 45 Past Commander Phyllis York; and Area 4 judge Katherine Rayner were on hand to witness Danielle perform well for the Department title.
